  • "Etiquette Dinner"


    • Etiquette Dinner

      • Etiquette means being aware of your surroundings
      • Avoid topics of discussion in sex, religion and politics
      • Arrive early to look at the menu
        • If you have allergies note it to the host and restaurant
        • Networking and connecting
        • Use mints, NO gum
        • Washroom
        • Buttons and zipper intact
        • Ability to make a good impression
      • Leave place setting the way you found it (no drinking water)
      • Ladies should have hair back in a neat bun
      • Cell phones off
      • If separate bills pay CASH!
      • Tip 15-18%
      • Keep bags under the seat
      • Name tag on top RIGHT hand side of chest
      • Clean voicemail
      • Remember business cards
      • Respond to “thank you” with “my pleasure”
      • NO ENGAGEMENT RINGS
        • May require maternity leave

       

      Waiter

      • No waving, snapping your fingers, whistling
      • Smile, nod or gentle raise of your arm is enough

       

      Greeting

      • Firm hand shake 2-3 shakes
      • Man and women equal in business world
        • No need to stand up
          • May be required only in Germany
      • Introduce self by first and last name
        • may require bow if international (research, research and research)
        • don’t wait for host to introduce
      • Business cards in both left and right jacket pockets
        • Received business cards in pant pockets
          • Do not put them in your rear pockets
        • Give out cards with both hands if possible
          • Card facing them
      • Do not remove jackets, sweat it out! Unless host takes his/her jacket off, then you may follow
        • May unbutton the front
      • Ask for recommendation from host
      • If the host recommends food, take the recommendation
      • If you are ordering instead of set menu, follow the course of what is being served!
        • If the host orders drinks, appetizers and entrée, do the same!
        • Avoid ordering messy foods
          • Ribs, spaghetti and smelly foods such as fish
          • Do not order most expensive dish

       

      Seating

      • Host should be at the head of the table if its rectangular table
        • Guest of honor on the right side
      • Enter and leave table on the right side of seat
      • Sit with you feet flat on the floor
      • Both wrist on the table at all times
      • Good posture

       

      Napkin

      • No shaking out the napkin

      • Left and right corner for blotting mouth
      • Open layer to get to the center to wipe your fingers

      • Should be left on your seat or at the back of your seat if leaving the table
      • Sneezing and Cough
        • Use napkin to shield
        • Turn head to the side
      • Go to washroom to blow your nose

       

      Setting

      • BMW

      “W” -Drinks

      • Avoid pop
        • Gas -> burping
      • Avoid wine
        • Does not know how your body will react
          • Drunk, redness, dizziness…etc.
          • If serving wine, try to pick white
            • Avoid mess if spilt
      • Do not pick up glass when someone is making toast speeches
      • Tend to take sips when holding glass
      • Never toast to oneself
      • Holding the stem not the ball of the glass
        • Warm up wine if holding ball
        • Finger prints evident if hold ball
        • Ask for room temperature water if possible
      • Be quiet when sipping drinks
      • Small sips do not gulp it all down (wine)

       

       

      Stand Up Reception

      • Stick to wine glass (even water)
        • Avoid condensation of the glass
        • Easy to hold w/ plate

        •  index finger to thumb around stem and mid-pinky to support plate
      • Avoid bringing purses or extra accessories
      • Open up circle if you see someone coming in

      Events @ a house

      ·        Make sure you RSVP

      o       Note the number of guest you are going to bring

      ·        Bring gifts, never go empty handed

      o       Potted plants, so hostess does not have to stop to put flowers in vase

      o       2 bottles of wine

      §         One to drink, other for host

      “B” –Butter and Bread

      • Menu goes under the bread and butter (BB) plate
      • Sometimes may have a small tiny butter knife
      • Using knife that is furthers out
        • Utensils goes from out to in
      • If butter in front is of you, pass it clockwise “to your left”
      • Offer it first before using it
        • Place butter at 5o’clock position
      • Do not move your butter plate
      • If the dinner rolls are being severed wait till everyone is server  before helping yourself
      • If its in a basket rotate clockwise
      • Rip a small piece and apply butter
      • Do not make a sandwich with dinner roll
      • Don’t lean knife against the plate    
      • Rest the knife on the BB plate -have the sharp edge face towards your “M”

      “M” –meal

      • Avoid using Salt and Pepper (SP) prior to tasting food
        • If you need it asked for it to be passed to you
          • Don’t reach for it
          • Never pass SP alone, pass them both together
          • Do not cover the part that comes out
            • Hold the bottom
        • Try everything
        • No double dipping
        • Should learn how to use chopsticks
        • Okay to leave a little bit of food left
        • Do not cleanse the whole plate “Extremely CLEAN”
          • May thing you are still hungry
      • Do not be the first or last to finish all your food

       

      • Soup
        • Out to in (biggest spoon on the far right)
        • Hold spoon like pencil (thumb up)
        • Scoop outwards, closely to the top
        • Glide the spoon on outer edge to stop the dripping
        • Bring to mouth and tilt in on the side
          • No slurping
          • No shoveling (whole spoon in mouth)
        • Dirty used spoon should be returned to the plate under the bowl of soup
          • Never return to the table setting also when finish should leave on the plate
      • Salad
        • Out to in
        • Cut into small slices with knife and hold with fork
        • If there is olive put seeds to the side and take it out with your hand and wipe it with napkin
          • Using fork you may drop it
        •  
        • Fork on the left hand and knife on the right
        • Fork should always be facing down while eating
        •  not done yet and need to step away from table
        •  
          • done and ready for it to be take away
          • at 6 o’clock
          • knife and fork parallel
      • Palate Cleanser
        • Out to in
      • Entrée
        • If ordering pasta should be bow-tie or penne
        • Avoid poppy seeds, spinach, pepper, peppercorn
        • Out to in
        • If there is any bones put it to the side

       

      Sushi

      §         Fish side down to dip into soy sauce

      o       Rice will break in the soy sauce

      §         Do not pick pieces from sharing plate with the end you put in your mouth

      §         Try to eat with one bite

      §         Do not stick chopstick straight into one bowl of rice

       

      • Dessert
        • If waiter decrumbles for you let them do so
        • Or put fork on left and spoons on right
        •  
        • Out to in
        • Depending on dessert but always use both fork and knife
          • Spoon to put to mouth and fork to hold or assist with the food
          •  

       

      • Coffee and Tea
        • Ask for half cup if you use a lot of cream
        • Rotate cream and sugar left before using
        • Do not cling against the side loudly
        • Rest the spoon in the saucer

    started with butternut squash soup and sweet patatoe fries..
    the fries never made it for the pictures hahaha cuz we ate it alll.. the fries here arent as good as the ones at canyon creeek!!!
    but in hamilton bean bar will do...
    the soup was serve luke warm.! my friend phil was not impressed but we were scared that they would spit in our food but we got them to warm it up and they just gave us a new bowl =)

     

    My entree -chicken and wild mushroom pasta
    its one of my favorite and i always get it..
     
    Phil got this new york steak baguette -> he throughly ennjoyed it!
    i liked it but i really liked it at niche and the seasoning is alright..but still a 6/10 i guess

    i also recommend the bean bar chai latte
    and the blueberry tea with grand marnier!!
